Post & City Of Georgetown Plan Reinterment Of Long Lost WWII Georgetown Native First Lieutenant Charles W. "Woody" McCook On Saturday, August 2, 2025

Recently the Defense POW/MIA Identification and Accountability Agency in Hawaii identified the remains of 1st Lt Charles W. (Woody) McCook, a Georgetown native and graduate of Georgetown High School and Southwestern University. Woody joined the Army Air Corps upon graduation from SU and was trained to be a B25 Mitchell pilot. In 1943 while supporting operations in the Indo-Pacific Region his plane was shot down over Burma. The crew was buried by locals and recovered by the Army in 1947. The remains had no identifying information so the remains were interred at the National Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, HI in an unknown grave. Using DNA his remains were identified earlier this year and his remains will be returned to Georgetown on July 31st with a reinterment in the International Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery next to his parents on Saturday August 2nd. Post 8587's Senior Vice Commander John McCleskey and Post 8587's Commander Juan Amaya are working with the City of Georgetown to ensure that 1st Lt McCook is welcomed home in a big way. This has garnered attention of our District and State Commanders, the Post is leading the way to celebrate McCook's return with the entire community. The State Motorcycle Unit Chair is willing to help with the processional through town with a motorcycle escort and then to the cemetery. McCleskey met with the Gabriels Funeral Home and Georgetown Police Department the week of June 23rd to work out the route of the processional to take it around the square, through SU before heading to the cemetery. Additionally, the Post is working with other Civic Organizations to get the word out to maximize community participation. Further, the Post is working with the Devil Dog Squadron of the Commemorative Air Force to conduct a B25 Flyover during the actual graveside service. Transfer of Remains and Honors are being taken care of by the U.S. Army. This is a very large project that has the potential to put Post 8587 in the spotlight both in the Department of Texas and nationally. The event will be covered by all area Media Sources (newspaper and television).
